About the event

About Firehouse: The Firehouse is a creative learning space in the Forest Park – South Avondale neighborhood of Birmingham, Alabama dedicated to the enrichment of the city’s musical community. They offer a variety of music education programs with scholarship opportunities for the musically-underserved students in the community, as well as sustainable employment for Birmingham’s working musicians.

Janet Simpson (Singer-Songwriter, Country, Indie-Folk, Indie Rock): Singer-songwriter Janet Simpson has been a key part of the Alabama music scene for years. Getting her start in Atlanta, Georgia in the late 90s, Simpson has since been a part of acts such as Delicate Cutters, Teen Getaway, and Wooden Wand & the World War IV, in addition to her work with writing partner Will Stewart. Last year's Safe Distance was her first album released under her own name.

Janet is the Board Chair for the Firehouse Community Arts Center.

Terry Ohms (Rock, Indie): Terry Ohms is the alter ego of Wes McDonald, who was the principal songwriter and singer/guitarists for Vulture Whale and The Ohms, and is currently the drummer for dream-psych-rock outfit People Years and Birmingham's The Blips.

Besides playing with the Blips, a band with many connections to the Firehouse, Wes has taught courses on the business side of music and label management at the Firehouse.

Ruffino (Rock): Ruffino is the rock and roll project of three brothers (Jackson, Max, and Sims Ruffino).

Jackson and Max continue to learn and play music at the Firehouse every week, and in doing so, they also influence and help others learn. Jackson, an incredible drummer and multi-instrumentalist, helped teach at the Firehouse's summer camp program at Avondale Elementary
